Common Reasons Windows Fog Up

Windows bring natural light indoors, improve ventilation and capture scenic outdoor views. It isn’t uncommon for homeowners to be concerned when their windows fog up. Fortunately, condensation on windows isn’t always a bad sign.

Read on to find out common causes of window fogging.

What Usually Causes Windows to Fog Up?

Temperature Differences

Condensation will inevitably develop on windows when there is a significant difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures. It forms when warm, humid air comes across a cold object. Warm air holds a lot of moisture. It contracts as it cools down, causing the moisture to condense.

You usually see condensation on your windows because they are among the coldest surfaces of your home. When your air conditioner is on in summer, you may notice fogging on double-hung windows. It’s because the air inside the house is cooler than the air outdoors.

Humidity

Increased indoor humidity can cause condensation on glass surfaces in your home. A humidifier can help maintain healthy humidity levels in your living space. Run exhaust fans when cooking, showering or doing activities that can generate heat and moisture. Sufficient attic ventilation is also helpful in eliminating warm, humid air from your home.

Should You Worry About Window Condensation?

Multipane windows contain gas fills, such as argon or krypton. Manufacturers place special seals around the glass panes to keep these gases from escaping. The gas will leak out when these seals fail, causing the affected window to lose energy efficiency.

Fogging between the panes is a common indication of window seal failure. This issue is more common in older units. You’ll have to contact professionals if you can’t wipe the condensation on the glass of your windows. After an inspection, they’ll know what caused the problem and the best way to address it.
