Well-maintained windows and doors are important contributors to the appearance and safety of a home. Depending on the home’s location, they deal with varying degrees of heat, cold, rain, dust, and other factors throughout the year. Read on to learn more about an annual maintenance check of a home’s windows and doors.
Window Frames and Weather Stripping
Check the caulking on the exterior edges of the window frame. Remove anything loose or old and reseal with high-quality caulk. Give special attention to the weather stripping that fills the space between the frame and sash to prevent air from escaping and water from entering. Replace it if worn.
Rubber Seals and Windowsills
Examine all the rubber seals on windows, sills, and doors for signs of stress. Replace those that can no longer prevent leaking air, water entry, and in some cases, help keep the window in place. Look for signs of mold or rot on the windowsills, usually a sure sign of moisture infiltration.
Washing the Windows and Screens
For windows, mix one part hot water to one part distilled vinegar. The acidic composition of vinegar acts quickly to break down the film that usually gathers on glass surfaces. In an area away from direct sunlight, apply the solution to the window with a sponge, then use a squeegee to clean it from top to bottom, wiping the squeegee after every stroke. Dry the window quickly to prevent streaking. To wash the window screens, use mild soap, water, and a soft-bristled brush to remove dirt and grime from the screens, then rinse and allow to dry.
Reviewing the Exterior Doors
Check each door’s handles or knob, lock, and hinges for irregularities. If any are loose or the lock is unstable, fix the problem or replace the faulty part or item. Be sure to examine the weather stripping for signs of age, cracks, and leaks.
A New Coat of Paint
Since each door is subject to the weather, remove any chipped paint, nicks, and scuff marks, then touch them up with the appropriate color. Also, consider an entire coat of fresh paint for any door in need. Refurbishing ensures protection against the elements and extends longevity. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on the paint, finish, or stain selected.
