1. Wrong Rough Openings and Jamb Sizes
A good contractor takes the correct measurements, especially when it comes to the size of rough openings and jambs. While it’s true that a window can be built to fit almost any rough opening size, some manufacturers may build “standard” sizes that may cost less than custom-build windows. The rough opening for a 2′ x 3′ double-hung window, for instance, may vary depending on its style and manufacturer.
Your contractor also considers the measurements of the jambs when it comes to windows with the jambs attached. If the finished surface of the interior walls is going to be plaster, tongue and groove, or any other material thicker than 1/2-inch drywall, or if you’re installing windows onto sheathing that is thicker than 7/16 of an inch, expect your contractor to add to the width of the jambs.
2. Failure to Add a Back Slope
The sill on a rough opening is sloped to prevent water penetration. For this reason, your contractor will cut the cripple studs at an angle or add a sill-wedge or sloped fan after framing the rough opening. To accommodate the thickness of a sill-wedge or sloped fan, your contractor will also add to the height of the rough opening.
3. Poor Flashing Adherence
To ensure that the flashing tapes and membranes have adhered properly, your contractor will get rid of dust and debris and wipe off moisture from window sills as well as the weather resistant barrier (WRB). Because some tapes and membranes will not adhere in cold climates, installers must use a product that does, or incorporate cold-weather solutions such as adding primers before installing the flashing.
4. Misuse of Spray Foam
Many window contractors may fill the cavity around the entire perimeter of the window with expanding spray foam to prevent water from penetrating. However, a smart installer would avoid using too much foam or high-expanding foam as it may cause the jambs and frames to bow or distort.
